Traffic Separator System
Rubber Traffic Separator, also known as
‘The Snake,’ is a robust interlocking system
used to separate lanes and traffic.
Flexible posts simply twist-lock into
the rubber modules, allowing for easy
replacement when required (can be
screwed in place to prevent tampering).
• Made from recycled rubber
• Rubber profile keeps vehicles within the
lane — more effective than individual
flexible posts
• Can be permanently fixed or loose-laid
for temporary situations
• Quick to assemble and easy to maintain
compared to cones and individual
delineators — installed in 1/3 of the time
of traditional delineators
• Reduce regular maintenance on your
TTM set up.

ULTRAFLEX Separator System
Left: Old plastic post broken after 30 x hits.
Right: New post still looks brand new after 30 x hits.
Available in black or yellow bases, with white, yellow or orange posts.
Vanguard has developed a new separator
system to significantly improve durability.
We’ve used the original, proven rubber
modules and combined it with the one-
piece Ultraflex delineator which is tested to
100 hits at 100kmh and connects securely
into the rubber modules.
This provides a significant upgrade in
durability and performance, resulting in less
maintenance over time, and delineators
staying intact for much longer.

Case Study: Traffic Separators
Wellington Transport Alliance
Kim Buchanan — Maintenance Delivery Lead
Q. What was your experience with older
delineator systems?
A. They were a bit of a headache. They didn’t
handle knocks well, especially in areas with
tight geometry or heavy traffic.
We were replacing them far too often, and
once they started breaking, they became more
of a hazard than a help.
Maintenance crews were constantly going
back to tidy things up.
Q. How did Vanguard support you during
the research and selection phase?
A. Vanguard took the time to understand the
issues we were dealing with.
They presented options, explained what had
improved from older systems, and provided
enough detail to make an informed decision.
The real-world examples and testing
information gave us confidence we weren’t just
replacing one problem with another.
Q. How has the Ultraflex Separator System
performed on the Petone overbridge?
A. It’s been performing solidly.
It has already taken a number of hits and
bounced back without requiring replacement.
Visibility is good, the bases stay in place, and
overall it’s holding up well in a high-impact
environment.
Q. What difference have you noticed
between standalone delineators and
those used with a rubber base system?
A. There’s a noticeable improvement.
Standalone delineators tend to twist, loosen,
or snap after repeated impacts.
With the rubber base, the system absorbs
impacts better and stays aligned.
From a maintenance perspective, it means
fewer callouts and quicker fixes when required.
Q. What would you say to others who are
unsure about durability?
A. The hesitation is understandable — older
versions didn’t perform well.
However, the new system is a significant step
up.
It has already handled impacts that would
have destroyed previous products.
The design clearly addresses earlier weak
points, and the durability concerns don’t reflect
the current product.
Q. Overall, how would you describe the
upgrade?
A. It’s been a strong improvement.
There’s less maintenance, better resilience,
and a system that performs reliably in a tough
environment.
Vanguard have been easy to work with, and
the product is proving itself in the field.

Case Study: Traffic Separators
Higgins East Waikato — NOC
Ben Waterhouse — Renewals Manager
Q. What outcomes did you need to
achieve on your project in relation
to traffic management?
A. Provide a clear direction of travel for
road users.
A layout/product that couldn’t be
interpreted different by the road user than
the contractor.
Q. What did the Traffic Separator system
provide you in terms of functionality,
that wasn’t achievable via other
TTM methods?
A. Quick to assemble, quick to replace
when damaged.
A system that is self-supporting (i.e., short
term, it doesn’t need to be fastened down, it
doesn’t fall apart if hit. Install it, see how the
traffic behaves, adjust the layout, check again,
fasten down long term) .
Very fast to set up, often used to delineate new
traffic lanes on emergency works site before
opening the road .
The lego block base discourages vehicles from
driving over the delineators.
The delineators can be replaced without
tools in less than 5 seconds. We don’t need
TTM, just a spotter for our team to safely
complete maintenance .
Q. What results have you seen since
implementing the Traffic Separator
system?
A. Significant reduction in vehicles hitting the
delineators (re: extended maintenance period).
Replace 1/5 of the delineators compared to
the quantity of safe-hits we used to replace.
The TTM layout stays complaint & presentable
with low maintenance.
Reduced public complaints (people complain
that the roundabouts need to made
permanent which isn’t affordable for our client
in the current climate, the separators present
as a robust, presentable, mid-term solution to
the public eye).
Our staff don’t complain about having to
constantly maintain the sites, it’s easy & fast to
replace so they do it without asking and then
can continue with their days planned work.
Q. How did the Traffic Separator system
perform compared to previous set ups
using other TTM methods?
A. Extended maintenance periods from weekly
to bi-monthly (i.e. before we need to go and
replace a few of the delineators).
Established and fastened down in 1/3 of the
time of traditional safe hits .
Have never had to replace any of the lego
block separators.

Traffic Separator Pods are manufactured
from recycled rubber and can perform
a wide variety of duties in traffic
management.
They can be used to indicate lane
separation, cycle lanes, parking
bays, marking of traffic lanes in car
Park entrances, exit ramps and many
other applications.
Portable design allows these to be used
for temporary use i.e. loose-laid, or bolted
for more permanent situations.

RoadQuake Temporary Rumble Strip
Distracted drivers who fail to notice a
temporary works site in time can cause
serious injuries or fatalities. Traditional
portable speed humps don’t slow drivers
ahead of the work site, which puts road
workers at risk.
The RoadQuake Rumble Strip is designed
to be used well ahead of a work site,
providing an audible & physical rumble
effect which alerts drivers, giving them
time to react and slow down to a safe
speed before they reach the worksite.
Unlike 10kg plastic portable speed humps
that shift when driven over, the 48kg
RoadQuake stays firmly in place, having
been tested at speeds up to 130km/h
with minimal movement.
• Weighs 48kg — does not require
fasteners
• Generates the similar level of sound
and vibration as milled-in shoulder and
centerline rumble strips.
• Covers the entire width of a lane — 3.3m
wide when unfolded. Folds to 1.6m length
for transporting.
• Moulded handles for installation and
handling
• The non-slip textured surface helps to
keep RoadQuake 2F TPRS in place
• Certified and tested in USA, Germany,
France and Australia — approval is in
progress for NZ.
